Before you dig

  • Call Blue Stakes (811) for utilities.
  • Check city setback rules and HOA requirements.
  • Confirm property lines—avoid future disputes.

Materials (Utah standard)

  • 4x4 pressure-treated posts
  • 2x4 rails
  • Cedar pickets
  • Exterior screws or ring-shank nails
  • Concrete (use gravel base for drainage)

Post installation

  • Dig 24–30 inches deep (around frost line) and 8–10 inches wide.
  • Add 4–6 inches of gravel at the bottom for drainage.
  • Set posts in concrete, keeping them plumb; spacing 6–8 feet max.

Rail and picket installation

  • Set the bottom rail ~10 inches above grade to reduce rot.
  • Run a level string line for consistent top height.
  • Use two or three rails depending on height and wind exposure.
  • Attach cedar pickets with small, consistent gaps to allow movement.

Finishing

Let new cedar dry 1–3 months, then apply a penetrating oil stain. Avoid solid paint on fresh cedar; it traps moisture and peels.

Pro tip: In clay-heavy Utah soils, consider post saver sleeves or brackets to extend post life at the ground line.
