Option 1: Transparent stain
- Shows the wood grain
- Needs reapplication every 2–3 years
- Best for newer cedar
Option 2: Semi-transparent stain
- More UV protection while showing grain
- Most popular choice in Utah County
Option 3: Solid stain
- Looks like paint but still penetrates
- Better coverage and hides aging wood
Option 4: Exterior paint
- Longest color retention
- Highest maintenance if peeling begins
- Must be properly primed
Prep is everything
- Low-pressure wash to remove dirt and failed finish.
- Let dry at least 48 hours in Utah’s dry air.
- Sand rough areas and spot replace damaged boards.
- Seal cut ends before coating.
Utah sun destroys untreated wood. A semi-transparent oil stain every 2–3 years is the best value for most yards.
