Option 1: Transparent stain

  • Shows the wood grain
  • Needs reapplication every 2–3 years
  • Best for newer cedar

Option 2: Semi-transparent stain

  • More UV protection while showing grain
  • Most popular choice in Utah County

Option 3: Solid stain

  • Looks like paint but still penetrates
  • Better coverage and hides aging wood

Option 4: Exterior paint

  • Longest color retention
  • Highest maintenance if peeling begins
  • Must be properly primed

Prep is everything

  • Low-pressure wash to remove dirt and failed finish.
  • Let dry at least 48 hours in Utah’s dry air.
  • Sand rough areas and spot replace damaged boards.
  • Seal cut ends before coating.
Utah sun destroys untreated wood. A semi-transparent oil stain every 2–3 years is the best value for most yards.
