Step 1: Assess the room first
Before you buy paint, note what you are working with. In many older Provo and Orem homes we see:
- Settling cracks from clay soil
- Nail pops from seasonal expansion
- Smoke staining in rental turnarounds
- Flat paint that was never sealed
Confirm if it is new drywall or repaint, any water damage, an oil-based layer underneath, and whether the room is high moisture.
Step 2: Prep is 80% of the job
Remove outlet covers, vent covers, curtain hardware, and light fixtures if you safely can. Protect floors with canvas drop cloths, mask baseboards if they are not being repainted, and use quality tape (FrogTape or 3M) for clean lines.
Step 3: Repair the surface
- Scrape all loose paint.
- Fill nail holes with lightweight spackle.
- Repair cracks with a flexible patch compound; use mesh tape plus setting compound if cracks reappear.
- Sand smooth (150–220 grit) and wipe with a damp microfiber cloth.
Utah’s dry climate makes drywall crack repairs common, so do not skip this step.
Step 4: Prime when needed
Always prime new drywall, stained areas, dark-to-light color changes, patched areas, and glossy surfaces. Use a stain-blocking primer for water or smoke stains.
Step 5: Cut in properly
- Use a 2–2.5 inch angled synthetic brush.
- Dip one third of the bristles, wipe one side, and cut straight lines at ceilings and trim.
- Work in 3–4 foot sections and avoid overloading the brush.
Step 6: Roll correctly
- Use a 3/8 inch nap for smooth walls, 1/2 inch for light texture.
- Load evenly, apply a “W” pattern, then back roll to level the sheen.
- Maintain a wet edge—Utah’s dry air can cause flashing if you work too far ahead.
Step 7: Two coats minimum
Even if coverage looks good, apply two coats for durability and even sheen.
Step 8: Clean and inspect
Pull tape before paint fully cures, touch up under bright light, reinstall hardware, and dispose of waste properly.
